    Expedition to India and Nepal

A Himalayan trek is a dream. India gives it context.

We'll start in Delhi - chaos, honking horns, the scent of cardamom. From there we'll take the train to Agra, to stand before the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Then pink Jaipur, the ghats of Varanasi, and crossing into Nepal - on foot, like every traveller moving between worlds.

Pokhara, Annapurna, six days on the trail through bamboo, rhododendrons and Gurung villages, all the way to 4,130 m. We'll come back changed. For seasoned travellers and mountain lovers - the trip of a lifetime.

    Souvenirs and shopping

    What's worth bringing home

India and Nepal are two very different shopping worlds - from Mughal marble inlay in Agra to Tibetan singing bowls from Kathmandu. Here's what's worth bringing home, and where to find pieces with soul rather than mass production.

    Delhi and Agra
    • ·Marble inlay with semi-precious stones (an Agra speciality - the same technique used to build the Taj Mahal): coasters, boxes, trays
    • ·Mughal miniatures painted on silk and handmade paper
    • ·Kashmiri pashmina - shawls woven from the undercoat of the Himalayan goat (ring test: real pashmina slips through a wedding ring)
    • ·Darjeeling and Assam tea straight from the plantations at Khari Baoli (Asia's largest spice market)
    Jaipur and Rajasthan
    • ·Silver jewellery from Johari Bazaar - earrings, bangles, tribal and Mughal-style necklaces
    • ·Semi-precious stones - jasper, amethyst, garnet, kunzite (Jaipur is the world's gem-cutting capital)
    • ·Block-print fabrics from Sanganer and Bagru - bedding, tablecloths, dresses hand-printed with wooden blocks
    • ·Mojari - embroidered leather slippers of the Rajputs
    • ·Lac bangles from the Maniharon Ka Rasta bazaar
    Varanasi
    • ·Banarasi silk saris - woven on handlooms with Mughal motifs (priced from €50 to €5,000)
    • ·Silk shawls and scarves
    • ·Brass temple bells and oil lamps
    • ·Sandalwood incense from artisan workshops
    Nepal - Kathmandu and Pokhara
    • ·Tibetan singing bowls hand-hammered from 7 metals (we'll look for old ones, not new cast pieces) - Thamel has the best workshops
    • ·Thangkas - painted or embroidered sacred Buddhist images
    • ·Prayer wheels, prayer flags, carved wooden tantric masks
    • ·Nepali pashmina and Tibetan yak-wool wraps
    • ·Himalayan tea from Ilam (tastes like Darjeeling, costs half as much)
    • ·Lokta - handmade paper from Himalayan shrub fibre

In India and Nepal we'll haggle in the bazaars and markets (start at 30–40% of the asking price). In fixed-price shops and state emporiums (Rajasthali, Cottage Emporium), prices are set but quality is guaranteed - a good place for pricier purchases. Antiques over 100 years old require an export permit - we'll ask for the certificate.
